AQ-IQ Contest Guidelines

The Air Quality IQ contest allows middle school students to show off what they know about air quality problems and solutions. Each game, poster, brochure, diorama, video, poems, or journal will highlight air quality issues, and how to resolve those issues.

  • Any sixth, seventh, or eighth grade student from any public, private, or home school in Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, and Madison counties is eligible to participate.
  • 1 - 4 students may submit a project together.  No more than 4 students may submit a shared project.  Working individually or as a group will not affect judging of the project.
  • The Clean Air Community Trust reserves the right to keep projects to use as educational tools, otherwise it will be available for students to take home after the Air Expo.
  • Projects Due at the Clean Air Community Trust office between November 26 and November 30, 2007
  • Awarded will be presented at the third annual Air Expo in January of 2008

Project Guidelines

  • Please be sure that each project includes the name or names of students who are submitting it, their teacher's name, grade, and school name.
  • Judges will be critiquing projects in 3 areas:  Factual air quality information, Creativity, and Neatness and overall professional quality.  Please use these as a guide when creating your project.
  • It should include specific and correct facts about an air quality issue of importance, demonstrate creativity, and be as neat and "professionally" done as possible.
  • These areas combined will determine how effective the project is as an educational tool about air quality and air pollution.  Keep in mind that it should teach others who view it or interact with it.
  • Most creative formats are acceptable including poster, video, model, game board, brochure, Power Point, or other computer presentation software.
  • For all media-related projects, the project must be viewable or audible via computer, regular cassette player, DVD player, or VCR.  Therefore it must be submitted on CD, jump drive (memory stick), DVD, video-cassette, or audio-cassette.  If judges cannot open project or access it, it cannot be considered for the contest.
  • For Power Point presentations, please submit file in .ppt format only, or if submitting it in Power Point viewer format, also include it in .ppt format.
  • For all model projects, please make sure that all segments are secure and will remain secure during transport.
  • For all game submissions, please include directions and all pieces needed to play the game and also label separated parts with the names of the students, teacher, school, and grade.
  • Teachers, parents, and students please make sure that materials used to create the project are approved by the parent/teacher.

CACT staff will assign each project to a category based on the number and types of projects received.  The number of place winners in each category will depend on the number of projects in that category.  The Grand Prize of $500 will be awarded to the teacher of the classroom of the grand prize winning student(s).  Prize packages will also be awarded to the winning students.

The CACT Board of Directors and their guests judge projects, and all decisions are final.
